Trauma often changes the way that you see yourself and the world.

We treat trauma using Cognitive Processing Therapy, or CPT, which challenges and modifies unhelpful beliefs that may have resulted from your trauma. Research has shown that CPT is one of the most effective treatments for trauma.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is the reaction to a threatening or troubling experience that causes severe mental, emotional, and physical distress.

Some of the more common traumatic incidents include:

  • Abuse

  • Accident or injury (e.g., car crash, fracture)

  • Childhood abandonment or neglect

  • Criminal attack (e.g., assault, armed robbery)

  • Discrimination or racism

  • Loss of someone or something you care about

  • Medical condition or procedure

  • Natural disaster or emergency (e.g., wildfire, earthquake)

  • Warfare or military service

  • Witnessing someone else going through trauma

Complex trauma

Complex trauma usually refers to your personal response to ongoing or recurring traumatic experiences that may result in entangled psychological wounds. Examples include domestic violence and childhood abuse.

Intergenerational trauma

Intergenerational trauma occurs when disturbing events travel from one generation to the next. It can start with an individual, family, community, or group and then extend to future generations.

How do you treat trauma?

Dr. Sala uses Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to treat most forms of trauma. CPT is a short-term treatment for PTSD that has decades of research support. Dr. Cohen also conducts trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.
