Discernment Counseling

Discernment Counseling  Greenwich, Darien, Westport, Westchester, and Surrounding Areas in Connecticut and New York

At Sala Psychology, Discernment Therapy is one of our main areas of expertise. We work with couples on the brink of divorce to decide on the future of their relationship.

How is discernment counseling different than couple therapy?

Rather than working to solve your marital problems, discernment counseling helps you figure out if your problems are solvable. It is most appropriate when one spouse is "leaning out" of the marriage.

Should we do couples therapy or discernment  counseling?

Discernment counseling is most appropriate when:

  • You or your spouse are considering divorce but not entirely sure about it

  • You or your spouse find yourselves unsure whether to stay together or part ways

  • One person is "leaning out" of the relationship and the other person is "leaning in"

What will happen during discernment counseling?

We will work with you to learn what happened to your marriage and the part that each of you played in the problems, and what the options for your marriage are. You will decide if your marriage problems are solvable. You will walk out with more clarity and confidence about the decision you make about your marriage. You will make one of three decisions: 1. Continue the status quo; 2. Proceed with separation/divorce; or 3. Make a six-month commitment to couple therapy and change. Even if you decide to separate, discernment counseling can help your future relationships, and gives you a better chance to be good co-parents if you have children.
