Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse Counseling in Greenwich, Darien, Westport, Westchester, and Surrounding Areas in Connecticut and New York.

What is substance abuse?

Substance abuse pertains to the harmful use of psychoactive substances such as drugs and alcohol. This usage oftentimes starts as occasional or recreational in nature but can easily develop into dependency. Substance abuse interferes with behavior, judgment, and daily functioning and can lead to issues at work and at home.

Substance abuse can have a devastating impact on relationships. It diminishes communication, connection, and trust. When substance abuse is present, the relationship often becomes centered around the substance and corresponding issues rather than the love and support the relationship used to know.

Substance has a negative effect on both communication and emotional regulation. Arguments grow, avoidance increases, intimacy decreases, and disconnection can set in.

And for the non-dependent partner, feelings of anxiety, depression, and codependency are common. The life you both once knew can feel so out of reach.

Dr. Sala’s team will help you treat the relational wounds that substance abuse has introduced into your lives. It may feel impossible right now, but just know that your relationship is not the first to deal with these issues and your future together can look very different.
