What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that manifests as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep and/or early morning wake-ups. Insomnia can interfere with feeling refreshed during the day.
How do you treat insomnia?
Our treatment approach is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and incorporates mindfulness. Research has shown that 50-75% of patients attain clinically significant improvement after a short course of CBT. We will work with you to address unhelpful thoughts about sleep, adjust habits that contribute to insomnia, help set a sleep schedule, learn to relax, and learn to decrease anxiety/arousal when going to bed. We will teach you strategies on what to do in the middle of the night when you are unable to sleep. We will help you identify and address other factors that may contribute to insomnia, such as caffeine overuse, lack of exercise, depression, stress, and anxiety.
